In 1963 the Roberts Dairy Company and the Office of Civil Defense wanted to conduct an experiment to see if the cows would survive a nuclear attack. So the farm built a special huge concrete shelter under the dairy farm at Elkhorn. It was big enough to house over 200 cows and a few bulls. The experiment included 35 cows, a bull and two students. So basically, one of the things that the Office of Civil Defense and the farm wanted to find out, is if the cows' milk will be affected by living underground. Well, more info is in these sites. I included two links.
The actual url is too long for me to post. When you go to this site, choose "sheltering cows" from the left column under "Civil Defense".
