Blog - Mustaches of the Nineteenth Century

A nice blog called Mustaches of the nineteenth century. I appreciate all the hard work this blogger bring us. Not an easy subject to blog about, I'd think. These may be belong to the 19th century, but not surprising, some of them still popular today. I know someone with the handlebar mustache. It's amazing. If you are deaf, I guarantee you that lip reading is a drag. There are pictures of men and their 'groomed" mustaches. I've seen other sites about the same topic, including one that is about a mustache competition. This blog also have terms for the mustache (under "confused?"). I can't believe some of the names they have and the terminology. Here is one, and I am quoting this from the site's glossary page:

"Handlebar

A mustache grown to have long sides that is held rigid by wax or other products to keep it from dropping below the mouth. Term originated amoung shocked travelers who were gravely assaulted when natives mistook their faces for bicycles." I also love this term: Oh fiddle'stache!

I did some searching about the man in the photograph. Charles Jacotin was the name of the photographer from Strasbourg, France (I originally thought it was the name of the person in the picture). The man with the handlebar mustache is the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este, Austro Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia. Until his assassination in June 1914, along with his wife in Sarajevo who was with him in a car, was a heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne. What is incredible about his assassination (indirectly by an assassin group called "The Black Hand" more info at the links provided) that it was the first step of incidents that started the WWI. Basically, the trigger that led to the ripple effects. I never knew that!!

Of course, I could be all wrong and it could be someone else. But I am pretty sure that's him since the photos resemble him.

Well, this is about a blog and mustaches, not the Archduke. The photograph just intrigued and fascinated me that I got carried away. Now I can see why the natives thought it was a bike handlebar ;-) .

This is the first time I see this store, so I don't know if they are reliable. They are similar to eBay. They have a lot of awesome and fantastic stuff. Can't say I recognize many of the toys themselves, but did recognize some of the characters. . I enjoy seeing all these vintage toys, and I think you'll do too. It's just a lot of fun. They have so many toys. Some of the toys even go back to early century. There are toys that cost like 3 bucks and there are very few that cost over a grand. There are total of 1271 toys!

Visit The UK For Vintage Toys

Another nice vintage toy box site from the UK where you can find vintage toys and games. There are also game rules, game Spare part, DVD for kid tv, vintage toys, books and annuals, jigsaws and puzzles. There is also an archive included. You'll also see sub categories.

This is a good site for those who are not familiar with British vintage game. Some games I did recognize from the US, like Master Mind and Operation. Note that you can enlarge the images.

Hangin' Out WIth The Frisbee

Wow, what a nice collection. I used to play frisbee when I was a kid, but I've never seen so many type. I had a typical red Wham. I also had the ring frisbee, which in my opinion was the best frisbee that I had. There are 225 frisbees shown here. There are championship frisbees since 1974. Some are amazing. There is even an eBay frisbee and a Fonz Fling, Lifesaver and the Beach Boys. Some of the frisbees have strange designs like the Whirlee Twirlee (set 13). My favorite were some of the cartoon ones and the Good Year tire above.

What Is That Creature?

A few days ago, my brother took this picture of this little creature. We don't know what it is. Chances are that this is a baby jack rabbit, since they are very popular. It's so adorable and tiny. It seems to keep itself warm, since its feet are under his body.

If you like art, you'll probably enjoy this site. It took me two hours to view it, and I'm not even done yet. So many artists and art works. Some have personal websites (from which I use the images) This site contains different mediums. There are all kind of mediums here, even "fountains". I've never heard of a medium called fountains before. Overall there are 13 t mediums presented. A lot of these medium are craft like concept. Some painting, neon, wood and more.

To my surprise, I recognized one of the artists as my former college teacher, and another as a an old friend of mine. I wonder how many other artists I know (but not their names). I was hoping to see my high school teacher. He was real good.

Game Inventor - Marvin Glass

Marvin Glass is the man behind the invention of some famous game. At the bottom of this page, there is a weird photo of him with huge glasses. A bit funny. The basic description of the site tells us that "This is Marvin himself with the specs, the story goes Marvin was at a party one time and he was talking to a self-absorbed bore. He stopped listening to what the person was saying and in his mind the persons glasses just kept getting bigger and bigger..." A former employee, Erick Erickson, tells us what it was like workig at Glass studio, and about Marvin Glass himself. .

Glass first invention was in 1948 (that is my understanding) when he invented the pocket theatre, Yaikty -Yak and a little chicken toy that laid agumball when you push it. There is more history about this gentleman, and photos of his game inventions. I only recognize a few because his toys were well before my time. But some, like the Operation still exist. I wish they displayed all of his inventions. He also designed games in the 60's and the 70's, I recognize, like the "rock'em sock'em robots".

A wonderful story in UCLA of a mother squirrel and her baby who tries to climbs a wall to join her with her help. Finally, after many attempts it was successful, but I won't give you the spoiler about how it did it ;-) But it's an awesome video story.
